My son is going to be playing his first year of T-Ball this spring. I am proud to be coaching him as I take the helm of the Eastern Greene Youth Baseball T-Ball Pirates! This will be my first time coaching a T-Ball team, so I am excited much like Aaron is, to be a part of his team.

My first T-Ball team was the Pirates and so was my wife's. I naturally selected the Pirates to be my son's first team. Got to keep the tradition going you know.

I also put in a bid to be the league's team photographer so I am anxious to find out if I will be doing the photography.

Eastern Biddy Basketball

This year, as I did last year, I helped my brother-in-law coach a 1st & 2nd grade biddy basketball team at Eastern. Little did I know that I would end up being a head-coach for a 3rd & 4th grade team. I admittedly do no know that much about basketball, but with my brother-in-law (a real basketball man) at my side, I thought I'd give it a go. I am glad I did.

I had a group of really good boys who learned so much throughout the season. We started off good with three wins, but hit a rough patch and lost 3 in a row. The combined difference between the score of two of those games was just 3 points. We finished strong to end our season and headed into the tournament.

As the tournament began, we were playing like I knew we were capable of playing. Every boy contributed as we made it to the championship game in the tournament. In the semi-final, we were down 7 with just a few minutes to go. We tied the game with a ball that rolled around the rim (to build suspense, I guess) and finally went in with about 28 seconds to go. We pulled away in OT and advanced to the championship, where we lost to the undefeated champions.

It was a satisfying experience and I look forward to coaching again next year.

E.R. Gray & Associates logo and website redesign

E.R. Gray & Associates, a land surveying company located in Columbus, Indiana desired a fresh new look for their business. Their old design was showing signs of age and was ready for an update.

THE LOGO:

I based the new logo design off of their old well-recognized logo, making the new design more crisp and modern looking. I removed the inside of the compass, and replaced it with the company's initials. This will allow the compass element to stand on it's own in time.

I also changed the wordmark font to a modern, much easier to read font.

The simplicity of the logo design makes it functional for embroidery on shirts, coats, and hats.

The new design presents the complicated topic of land surveying, into an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand manner. The approach to the redesign was simple. What if I were needing a land surveyor? What information would I need to know? I know absolutely nothing about land surveying, so I need the information in small digestable bites.

The new "Did You Know?" boxes quickly answer frequently asked questions that an E.R. Gray client may have. The "Request a Quote" makes it easy for potential clients to initiate business with E.R. Gray.

The feedback on the new design has been terrific, and the "Request a Quote" feature is already driving business to the company.

Thunder football pictures are complete!

Phew! I'm so thrilled to have completed the pictures for the Eastern Thunder Youth Football League. It was a daunting task, but we delivered, and the feedback we've received has been wonderful. I'm grateful to the League for selecting us, and we are happy to announce that we donated 10% of sales to the League!

It has been a very rewarding experience for us, and I hope to have more opportunities in the future to provide my services to ETYF.

As promised here are some examples:

We also offer a custom magazine-style photo.

Trader cards were a big hit with the players. On the reverse side is the player's information.

As I have mentioned before, it is such a compliment to me when families come back to us to do their portraits. We were happy to photograph the Spurlock family once again, and chose the Clear Creek Bridge in Bloomington, Indiana as the backdrop for their portraits. It was a beautiful evening for photography and a joy to see the girls once again as they are growing up so fast. Here are a few shots from their session.

I'm excited to have the opportunity to be the photographer for the Eastern Thunder Youth Football League! This is going to be such a fun adventure for me because I LOVE football and photography. It doesn't get much better than that.

I will post a few examples of my work as they are finished.

I am also very excited about this football season because I am helping coach my nephew's team. I played high school football in Evansville for the Reitz Panthers back in '94 - '98. It's been a few years since I've been involved in football, but the passion for the game has never left me. I hope to teach these young boys the proper fundamentals and a love for the game.

Studio 28 has gone international! Meet Patricia, a senior exchange student from Sweden attending BNL high school. We met at Otis Park in Bedford and had a fantastic photo session. Here are a few of the many great pictures we took.

We got to find out a lot about Patricia and her life back home in Falun, Sweden. I was especially glad to find out that she loves photography and computer graphics. We obviously had a lot in common to talk about!

Tyler and Kayla Tie the Knot!

Tyler and Kayla were married last Saturday in Bedford, Indiana. It was a bright and sunny day loaded with the typical Indiana summer heat. Despite the forecast, we still captured some pretty cool pictures of their wedding. We got things started off with the guys.

When we arrived, we could see that we were in for a fun time.

The gals got ready in a preschool room. Most of the time, I've noticed, as the ladies get ready for a wedding there is a stereo playing in the background to get ready by. Kayla said they looked the room over for a CD. The best they could come up with was Miley Cyrus.

We found a nicely-lit spot to get some gorgeous shots of Kayla. Here are a few of my favorites.

Recharging the batteries.

Life has been pretty busy for me since, ...oh... 2005. Work, family, church, photography and graphic design makes "me" time pretty scarce.

Sometimes I feel like I need to recharge the ol' batteries, but the batteries are the non-rechargeable kind. My family took off for Shakamak State Park for a week of camping. We took our two nephews along with us to share in our adventures.

Our cabin was close to the lake so we got to wake up to some great views of the water and the woods. I can't say that it was an entirely restful week, but we did have fun and it was a whole lot better than working my job. Of course, I brought my camera and spent some time photographing and enjoying God's creation.

These little guys are so ugly and so beautiful at the same time.

I see why the "real" nature photographers have 8 foot long zoom lenses when they photograph animals in nature. I had to get as close as I could without scaring this bird away. It was hard to do.

I scoped out this dock one day and thought it would be a neat place to photograph at sunrise. It was so peaceful. There was some pretty neat "smoke" on the water too.

I love the contrast of the dead, white barked trees against the living trees.

These lily pads seemed lonely.

I found a secluded picnic area one evening and was amazed at the light shining in during sunset. I didn't get the chance to go back to photograph during that time, but I did go over during the early morning. The mood wasn't at all the same, but it did offer some nice photographs. Ah, maybe next year.

It was a great vacation. I can't wait to go back next year.

We had a great (although very hot and humid) time at IU taking their family photos. Here are a few of my favorites from their shoot.

Road trip to Denver, Colorado!

This past week, my employer sent me to Denver, Colorado to attend a graphic design conference. It was AWESOME! Both the conference and the road trip were amazing experiences. I had never gone out west before. The furthest west I'd ever been was St. Louis.

The conference itself was amazing. The presenters they brought in were very well experienced in their fields, with outstanding resumes. It was a 4-day conference, that I stretched into a little over a week with some vacation time. My wife and son tagged along to make it a nice family road trip.

Heading into Colorado on I70, you could see the outline of the highest peaks from miles and miles away. I couldn't wait to see them up close! Denver is a beautiful city (despite being the home of the Denver Broncos, see the end of the video in this post), and the views of the Rockies were gorgeous.

It was a whirlwind of a trip. We did some sight seeing, and spent one evening driving through the mountains. That was the highlight of my trip. Some things I didn't get pictures of until we were headed back to Indiana. Here are a few pictures from the adventure:

The Denver Convention Center was huge. I got a lot of walking exercise that week. The inside was very open and bright. Lots of natural light coming in from the walls of windows.

Our first sight-seeing trip was to the Wings over the Rockies Air Force Museum. It's a small museum, but does have some neat planes and displays.

I was excited to drive up into the Rocky Mountains. I was amazed at the size of the peaks, and to see snow in June! The views were great. Traveling on I70 made Jessica nervous, but it was fun anyway.

We stopped in Idaho Springs, Colorado at about 7,400 ft. above sea level, for a bite to eat. We pulled into a small Mom-n-Pop kind of place and enjoyed a delicious dinner. I tried Fried Okra. Maybe it was the thin air that made me do that.

We kept heading west after dinner. As we passed one peak and rounded a corner, we'd see another one twice as big. I was surprised to see Wal-Mart, Kohl's, Lowe's, CVS Pharmacy and other big-named stores nestled tightly on the mountain sides. I can only imagine what the travel is like during the snowy months.

We were headed to the Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnel on I70 so we could drive through one of the peaks. The tunnel was really narrow and really long. Jessica wanted out of there fast.

The views on the other side of the tunnel were just as, and maybe even more splendid than before the tunnel. I think we ended up at about 11,000 ft. above sea level before we decided to stop and fill the car up with gas and head back to the hotel.

The next night we went to the Denver Aquarium and Restaurant.

This was the view from our dining table. Pretty cool!

After dinner we explored the aquarium. The displays were so large that it felt like you were in the water with them!

I'd never been under an entirely enclosed tunnel like this.

You'd think these ducks would just hop over the small glass lip and break for freedom. You can see a concrete pillar to the right of the frame that's about head level. I was standing there looking at one of the ducks when Jessica pointed out to me that another duck was sitting on the pillar, mere inches from my head.

I can see why they call the Great Plains "Tornado Alley". There isn't so much as a sniff of a hill to block any wind. I was surprised at how few trees there were.

Any guesses as to what this absolute monster of a piece of equipment is?

It's a single propeller for one of these kinds of wind powered electric generators.

It was hard to find anything to help put these into perspective. They are roughly 300 ft. tall. I was going to make a reference to the movie "Mac and Me" and the straws but I won't.

We also got to spend some time touring the US Mint, which was fascinating. The drive wasn't as bad as I thought. Nonstop the trip would have been 18 hours from home to Denver. We stopped in Topeka, Kansas to break the trip up into two days. We had a great time and I hope to go back some day.

You may have gathered from my earlier post about Bernie Kosar, that I am a Cleveland fan. My nephew Braydon was so excited to tell me that his baseball team this year was the Indians. He has played very well so far...better than most of the actual Cleveland Indians' players.

I'm so glad that warmer weather is finally here. I love winter and the snow, and especially Christmas, but am always glad to see the change in seasons. I ventured out one sunny afternoon and tried my hand at some nature photography.

I love Resurrection Sunday. What the day stands for, for me personally, and the fellowship with family and church family. Little did I know this year it would be the day I would agree to take in a puppy. My wife has been trying to convince me for the last 3-4 years to get a puppy for our son.

I have been against the idea the whole time. It's not that I don't like dogs or pets. I just choose not to have one because they cost money and generally get into things they shouldn't be getting into.

My in-laws found two abandoned puppies behind their barn. Jessica asked me if we could keep one. Look at her. What am I supposed to say?

Owen's PR Shots

You may recognize Owen from a previous wedding we photographed. We photographed his and Amanda's wedding last May.

Owen thought of Studio 28 when he needed some PR shots for a piano competition he was going to participate in. We were glad to help him out. Owen played a beautiful piece for his new bride on his wedding day, so he should do very well in the competition.

Kevin and Amy are Married!

Kevin and Amy were married on a sunny October 24th day in Bloomington, Indiana, at the beautiful St. Charles Catholic Church.

We had a great day with Kevin and Amy and their families. The day started off with Amy and her girls. The mood was really light and relaxed. Everyone was having a great time!

We then got to hang out with Kevin and his entourage. The guys were funny to be around. It was great for shooting candid natural-looking pictures!

After the guys, we re-focused on the ladies. Here are some stunning portraits of Amy.

The ceremony was a traditional Catholic ceremony and Mass.

Amy's sister sang a beautiful song during the ceremony!

It was really touching to see the happiness on Amy and Kevin's faces when her sister sang.

After the ceremony it was time to prepare for Kevin and Amy to be treated as celebrities, showered with bubbles and the flash of the paparazzi.

Kevin tries to look as manly as possible holding Amy's bouquet.

We stepped outside to take advantage of the gorgeous day. The sunlight was amazing as it lit the leaves in the trees, creating dramatic light and shadows. I just love the color and texture of these pictures.

This was the first time we ever shot "jumping" pictures. The motion in the picture is so fun to look at. I was surprised at the hang-time some of the ladies had!

Growing up in Southern Indiana in the late 80's, there was no one I would rather be in a game of football than Bernie Kosar. All of the other kids I played with were Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Bo Jackson, etc. etc. And with good reason. But I chose Bernie. My buddies would always reply with a resounding "WHO?"

Bernie wasn't your typical quarterback. He lacked the style, grace and mechanics that a pro quarterback "needed", but boy could he win games. And that's why I liked him so much. I like the under-dawg.

This YouTube video is a perfect example of what I mean:

Yes Bernie, the quarterback position is a "result oriented position, in a result oriented world," and you did it best.

I always dreamed of meeting Bernie and getting an autograph. I was close once, when my family drove to Ohio in the late 80's to visit family for summer vacation. We went to the Browns training facility and watched a practice. Bernie didn't practice that day, but it was the closest I got...until now.

My brother-in-law told me that Bernie was going to be in Bloomington at a Longaberger Basket Party of all things. Apparently he's the Celebrity helping sell a new line of NFL team logoed baskets. Didn't matter. This was my chance.

I took my son Aaron with me to meet Bernie. When we walked in, it was packed, and we were 2 of maybe 8 guys in the whole building...including Bernie.

We promptly got in line to meet Bernie, we got to shake hands, he high-fived Aaron and signed some autographs. He liked my son's #19 Kosar jersey, and he signed it!

Bernie, if you're reading this, thank you for signing some cards, and my son's jersey. It was a pleasure to finally meet you.

Ryan and Amanda are Married!

Ryan and Amanda are perfect for each other! I was excited to photograph their wedding because of the way they smile and laugh with each other. I knew I was going to get some great pictures of them. It was a beautifully sunny wedding day for the lucky couple, however, it was blisteringly hot and humid. That didn't keep us from having a great time. Ryan and Amanda were good sports! They were eager to do whatever they needed for their day.

Here is the very lovely Amanda! Her dress was beautiful and the flowers were so bright and vibrant!

I love Ryan's expression.

The thing about being a photographer is that you get totally engrossed in what you're doing. I often quite literally experience what the bride and groom experience. This is just such a case. I had bubbles popping in my ears on my hands and face. At one moment I worried that my camera was going to get ruined by the soap...Ah, it's all part of the job. Ryan and Amanda definitely got the brunt of the bubbles though.

Brent and Katie Wedding

I was excited to be taking Brent and Katie's wedding photography. We first met Brent and Katie back in the fall of '08 when we photographed his brother's wedding. So it was nice to see all of their family again.

We traveled to the north side of Indianapolis to First Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church. It was a beautiful sunny day...until you stepped outside and got hit with the heat and humidity. We didn't let that phase us though. We still got some fantastic pictures! Brent and Katie make a beautiful couple!

We got things started with Brent and his groomsmen. They were a funny group of guys, and very easy to work with.

I love the ceiling in this church.

Just after I took this picture, a bee tried to land on the flower on Brent's jacket. Hilarity ensued.

Baby Ryne

I recently had the pleasure of photographing beautiful Baby Ryne. We had a great time hanging out with Ryne and his mom and dad at their home.

Ryne was just finishing up a nap when we got there, and was alert and active for us when he woke up. He's got the brightest little eyes. I love how they light up when the sunlight hits them just right.

It wasn't long before Ryne realized he was hungry...

Owen and Amanda

We had a great time shooting Owen and Amanda's wedding day. It was our first opportunity to photograph a wedding in Indianapolis. It was a beautiful warm, partly cloudy day. Owen and Amanda were married at the beautiful St. John the Evangelist Catholic church. Here are a few of my favorite shots from their day.

Owen, the man of the hour.

I love the ceiling in this church. The whole sanctuary is filled with beautiful woodwork and paintings.

Owen and Amanda had a traditional wedding ceremony. The altar area certainly made for some very beautiful and impressive photos. You can see that the ceiling is very, very tall!

After Owen and Amanda exited the sanctuary they slipped behind a folding partition and spent a quiet moment with each other. The guests walked past without knowing they were behind the wall. It was the perfect hide-away.

After the ceremony we got to spend some time taking some nice portraits.

At the reception, Owen and Amanda entertained their guests with their first dance. They took ballroom dancing lessons and did wonderfully!

Owen is an accomplished pianist, and played a beautiful number for his new bride.

Amanda closed her eyes and soaked in every last note that Owen played.

An applause for her man was certainly in order!

Thank you Owen and Amanda for allow us to be a part of your special day. We had a wonderful time with you, your family, and guests! Congratulations to the both of you!

Baby Julian

My wife and I traveled to Evansville recently to visit my brother and his wife and my new nephew, Julian. He's a beautiful little guy! My son Aaron held him on his lap, which was a really neat experience for him. Congratulations John and Tiffany!

Down time with the fam

We got together for my mother-in-law's 29th (wink, wink) birthday today. We got some much needed relaxation. I like down time because it gives me a chance to just fiddle with my camera and take pictures of my family. Any photographer will tell you, they like to experiment with different camera settings to discover new or personally never tried techniques. My wife is typically my test subject, or my son (who loves to say "cheese," but continues to play as if I'm not there). This time I was my own test subject. (Apparently this is the only pose I know how to make. Look at my profile picture. Geez.)

I had a great time tossing the pig-skin with my nephew. He's definitely a tough guy as this picture illustrates.

My wife...the chocoholic. Her philosophy: Dessert isn't dessert unless it is chocolate.

Kids will be kids

I love photographing children! I know parents must think the photo shoots are a nightmare for me when their kid isn't "cooperating." But the beauty of photographing children is capturing them as they are! I don't mind when a child goofs off a little bit...so long as they don't crash into my equipment, of course.

Kids will be kids. I just take what they give me. To me this is a priceless opportunity to capture their real smiles, real giggles, and yes sometimes real tears. My wife is a great assistant. She loves to play with the kids during the shoot, providing well-timed distractions, allowing me to keep my eye to the view finder. We're a really great team.

Helping a brother in need

I had a great opportunity to help my twin brother video a wedding in Evansville recently. His wife is 8 months pregnant and wasn't going to be able to handle being on her feet, so Bill called me up to help. He owns WDRdesign, a wedding videography business in Wadesville, Indiana. He shoots digital video, and creates beautiful DVD movies. In each DVD he includes a photography slide show...that's where I came in. Here are some of my favorite shots from the wedding.

Andy generously gave his back for Tera to sign the marriage certificate.

The bride and groom chose deep cranberry red and chocolate brown for their colors. Their Wedding Decorator/Coordinator, Terry Hughes did a wonderful job with the details. The flowers were beautiful and the decorations in the sanctuary and reception hall were fantastic. She used fresh cranberries in the decorations on the bridal table and cake table. Pretty cool!

Spurlock Family

The Spurlock family was one of four winners from a drawing we held for a free photo session. You can say this is an award-winning family! We met on a crisp fall Saturday afternoon at Bryan Park which was a beautiful day for portaits.

We started out by photographing the whole family, and ended with the kids playing on the playground. I enjoy photographing children when they're playing. They have such genuine smiles!

Chris and Stacy

We had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Chris and Stacy's wedding at Indiana University's Well House. Indiana University is such a beautiful campus. Rain was in the forecast for days prior to their outdoor wedding, but thankfully it moved out of the area the night before. The air was a bit cool, but at least it was sunny and dry.

Chris and Stacy's wedding ceremony was small and intimate, with just 15 people witnessing the event. The bridal party was comprised of the bride's only sibling as the matron of honor and the groom's only sibling as the best man. Stacy's niece did a marvelous job as the flower girl, dropping flower petals down the "aisle" for the bride. This little girl is SOOO CUTE! I think she should grace the cover of a baby style magazine or something.

Chris and Stacy each had a vase filled with sand that they poured into a single larger vase, signifying the blending of their lives together. Such a cool idea.

There are so many great places to take pictures on IU campus. I wish I could have spent all day with these two and their families! PS-Congratulations to Brent and Katie on their engagement and upcoming wedding!

I believe the word here is "smitten."

Stacy is a beautiful person, inside and out.

Chris is a really terrific, genuine guy.

Together they make such a sweet couple.

Chris & Stacy - We had such a wonderful time with you and your families. Everyone was so pleasant and easy to work with. It's experiences like these that make me glad to be a photographer. Congratulations!

Jessica's Senior Portraits

Jessica rocked this photo session! She was so eager to work with us and work it for the camera. I must admit, I thought that she would be a little shy, but her experience with dance/poms took care of that. We started her photo shoot at Indiana University's Sample Gates. A magnificent backdrop for portraits. We jumped right in and Jessica did terrific.

This is MY town.

A quick outfit change and it was back to business.

IU campus has so many great places to take portraits.

We moved from IU campus, to her family's living room. We are a mobile studio, and can set up almost anywhere.

We couldn't end the photo shoot without getting a picture with the family pet.

Jessica - You were a blast to work with! It was a pleasure spending time with you and your parents. We wish you the best of luck in your senior year!

Nathan and Elizabeth

We got to travel to southern Indiana for Nathan and Elizabeth's wedding. I lived in Evansville, Indiana for about 18 years, so it was a homecoming for me. The groom and I have known each other for about 14 years, and I was thrilled that he and his then fiancee asked us to photograph their wedding. Nathan and Elizabeth made for a beautiful couple to photograph. They are best friends, and it shows in their photos. The wedding was held in a small country church about 25 minutes west of Evansville.

We got things started with the groom and groomsmen. These guys were hilarious. It made holding the camera still difficult because I was laughing. I love it.

This family knows how to handle their time efficiently...

Kids bring a lot of character to photographs. Nathan was happy to oblige this young man with a super smile.

A gentleman and a scholar...

Elizabeth really liked the field behind the church. It was a wonderful backdrop for this tender moment.

Nathan spent an entire year learning how to play "Brown Eyed Girl" on the guitar. He wrote his own lyrics for this tune. He sang about how they met in college and fell in love. How cool is that? It had Elizabeth in tears.

I never thought it would happen. I have a blog.

I never thought that I would have a blog. Who wants to hear what I have to say? My wife would say nobody, and I believe her.

Anyway, here I am, bloggin' away. I will post random thoughts and pictures from some of the photo sessions that we do. I hope to share with you the experiences we have and some of my favorite images from our sessions. We'll have some fun too. I will post some of the "outtakes" as well.

I've been doing photography and graphic design for 6 years now, and have enjoyed every minute of it.

I think the guy behind me was tempted to shove me off the chair.

I love what I do, and as you can see, I really get into my work. It's also apparent that I don't care what I look like while I'm working.

This is my beautiful wife and assistant, Jessica...

I still don't know how a woman so beautiful and down to earth would want a guy like me (see previous picture and comments).
